How to Tie Your Shoes is the story of a father's absence. Opening with the sentence 'My father is going to die,' the novel is an account of everything a son could never say to his father. Individual trauma is accompanied, in the background, by the collective trauma that followed the break-up of Yugoslavia. Both truths are worked into the novel with great skill. The authenticity of the fiction is Nikola Petković's hallmark.
